Double Take is a brand new series that invites artists from across the country to premiere unique collaborative performances. Each pairing features original works by both artists and a set of duet performances, creating space for new innovations, arresting improvisations and a moment to “trade” melodic ideas, in the spirit of the jazz idiom. The Loft transforms into a jazz club with a relaxed atmosphere, welcoming you to kick back and relax and let the magic unfold.
“an instinctively melodic approach,” The Age.
The scene is set for a fiery meeting of brass when Julien Wilson and Angela Davis take the Stonnington stage. Their show features superb original works and face-melting collaborations, creating a program of powerful saxophone-led contemporary jazz.
One of Australia’s most exciting in-demand musicians and composers, Angela Davis has performed with jazz luminaries such as Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, James Morrison, Dan Tepfer and Linda Oh. She holds a Masters of Music from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and received the Brian Boak Outstanding Performer Bursary in 2014. A three-time Bell-Award nominee, her compositions display her “beautifully elegant, honeyed alto tone, reminiscent of Paul Desmond” (The Australian) and illustrate why she has been invited to perform at clubs such as world-renowned New York City venue The Kitano.
Bell Award winner Julien Wilson has solidified his place as an integral member of the Australian Jazz scene. His distinctive musical style has led to international jazz festival appearances in Berlin, Indonesia, NZ, Bolivia and Korea and recording credits on more than seventy releases. An in-demand soloist he has performed with artists such as Kurt Elling & The Sydney Symphony Orchestra Gavin Bryars and Aventa Ensemble, Vince Jones, Hugh Masekala, Hermeto Pascoal, Jim Black, Bob Moses Quartet and Paul Grabowsky.
