“Judy Bailey holds a special place in Australian jazz history as one of this country’s earliest and most prominent jazz musicians,” ABC Radio National.
“We all value Judy Bailey more than we can say,” Jim McLeod, ABC Jazz.
One of Australia’s greats, Dr. Judy Bailey, the award-winning pianist, composer and arranger makes her Stonnington Jazz debut. Her extraordinary achievements and unique talent have made a
profound impact on the Australian Jazz scene. Her accolades are significant; not only winner of the inaugural APRA award for Jazz Composition and a winner of Australian Entertainment Industry ‘MO’ for entertainment; she received an Order of Australia Medal in 2004 for her services to Music and Education; the Australian Classical Music Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music in 2008 and was inducted into the Bell Awards Hall of Fame 2014.
In the 1960’s she rose to prominence through regular appearances at the legendary El Rocco Jazz Cellar, working with artists such as John Sangster and Don Burrows. Her brilliant piano stylings and adept arranging ability led her to working with Tommy Tycho’s Orchestra (Channel 7), Don Burrow’s Septet (Channel 2), John Bamford’s Orchestra (Channel 9), Jack Grimsley’s Orchestra (Channel 10) and accompanying vocalists such as Margaret Roadknight and Marcia Hines. Her recording catalogue traverses genres from the Avant Garde to big band jazz; to solo piano albums and not to mention the funk-collector favourite – “Colours” album from 1977 (recently sampled by American hip-hop artist Rick Ross on his album “Rather You Than Me”, #2 on the 2017 US charts). A founding faculty member of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she continues lecturing to this day.
For Stonnington Jazz, audiences are treated to a special and intimate show at Chapel off Chapel. For one night only, Judy invites the audience to decide on the repertoire, creating a personalised and interactive evening. Choose your favourite standard or Judy Bailey song, write it down before the show and watch Judy randomly open the requests on stage and hit the keys. Do not miss the chance to be in the presence of an icon for this uplifting and engaging show.
